TIMELINE

BACKGROUND

Machi X is an easy-to-use cryptocurrency exchange that tokenizes intellectual property. It provides convenient service contract modules for intellectual property owners who list their =properties, such as music, art, literature, inventions, designs, on Machi X, to return value to their token holders.
Machi X enables two values :

(i) Creators of intellectual properties to issue rights to their property

(ii) People who appreciate the value of these intellectual properties to invest into and own a fraction of the properties listed on the exchange.

MY ROLE

As the product manager of the Machi X project, my role was to define the features, user stories, user flows, wireframe and execute user research, leading a 6 people developing team, including backend engineers, frontend engineers, UI designers, and QAs, to maintain the development process on track.

PROBLEM

I was told that Machi X had to be a cryptocurrency exchange that is easy-to-use, and it had to connect to our cryptocurrency wallet VAULT, so users can only withdraw and deposit their cryptocurrency assets through VAULT. Yet most of the cryptocurrency exchanges have their own wallet, so users are not familiar with the connecting process, and might easily get confused.

I gave them a story and asked them to point out which button or action they would click or do to complete the story. It took me an afternoon to did the quick usability test with 5 testers, and I got the conclusion about making some change.

THE GOAL

You are about to sign up this exchange and want to make a selling/buying trade of ETH from your own wallet.

Try to finish your first trade on the screen.

1. Users would love to be blocked first if they could not use the trading feature, rather than press the button and pop out the forbidden message.

2. Showing only the clear wording for guiding them to connect the VAULT wallet will be better than showing them the default account screen with guiding wording.

3.separate the screen of wallet and trading account into to page will be much clear and have the feeling that they have to transfer token from wallet to account.

4. A link with a step Visualization of the relation between VAULT and trading account would help people who are familiar with pictures.

USER RESEARCH TAKEAWAYS

For each step they made, I asked them to tell me why they want to do this action, figuring out how to improve the flow. After the test, I got four insights:

A. Users got lost and were trapped on the compLicated Asset page, trying to find answers in the FAQ. The slow stop at the FAQ because they did know what to do.

B. Users got better flow with sperate VAULT and trading account, yet they still needed to look for the FAQ when they found out they can not make a trade.

SOLUTIONS

According to the testing conclusion, I change the default page

1. When users did not connect their account to the VAULT account, they cannot trade, and their assets only showed the wording that they have to connect VAULT. There is a button to lead them finished connecting.

2. When users connect VAULT but made no transfer to the trading account, instead of showing 0 balance in their account, just as the other exchanges always did, the account showed the wording that they have to transfer token from VAULT to account.

3. There is a link that pops up a  Visualization explanation about the relation between VAULT and trading account so that users can find help on the page they need without going to the FAQ.

After the change, the second test of the new 3 testers showed no problem about onboarding Machi X and made a trade on it.

C. Users who did not have VAULT: Needed help while connecting to VAULT, yet with a link with an explanation picture, they could finish their trade without asking for help.

D. Users who already used VAULT: quickly finished their first trade with all the appropriate blocks and guideline wording, so that they know what to do step by step to connect VAULT make a trade.

RESUlTS

With the interviewing result, the UI get great feedback from our product VP and CEO. We are still working on developing Machi X, and get exciting to meet the world in 2019 Q1!
